Principles of interior design
There are five basic well known principles of interiordesign. It is necessary to understand that these are simply the
principles and how you are going to apply them is your own choice.
There are no fixed rules. It is obvious that there can be some
subjective element in the definitions involved here. If you talk of
balance or harmony, or unity, everybody will have different idea about
it. There can be two different ideas about the harmony. But there
should be some harmony in your interior design. This applies to all the
principles of interior design discussed in this article.
The first principle of interior design will be unity. Your whole house
is total one unit. There are different spaces they are interconnected
by using stairways or corridors. The elements of interior design used
in all these rooms and spaces interconnecting them should compliment
each other. This unity does not mean you should use same elements in
each room or the spaces joining them. It means all these spaces as a
whole should give you a feeling of one unit of interior design and not
that of different units of interior design joined together without any
purpose. The color will play an important role in creating one single
composition out of these different rooms and spaces joining them.
The second principle of interior design is focal point or the emphasis
point. There is generally one focal point in the room. It can be
anything. It can be fireplace for example. Your entire interior design
plan should revolve and evolve around this focal point. There can be
different focal points. But the main idea is again they should be
complimenting each other. There should be good integration of all these
focal points. This focal point should be interesting. The viewer should
feel interested to explore further your interior design by simply
looking at this focal point.
The third principle of interior design is balance. There should be
visual equilibrium in your room. The objects are kept carefully to give
the distribution of visual weight. The line, texture, color and form
are the elements used in interior design. All these must be used in a
style which creates balance in the total interior
design. There are two more principles of interior design. The first one
is called as rhythm and the second one is called as proportion. Some
people add color and detail as he last two additional principles of
interior design.
The size relationships in a room are defined by the proportion and
scale. If you have a chair then it can be of small size useful for the
kids or it can be of larger size useful for the adults. The proportions
of furniture and other objects are very much important. The scales are
useful here. If the room space is small then proportionately these
objects should be of smaller scale.
